ANGOULÊME, Jul 28 (CP) - The second long time trial in the Tour de France is often exciting, but rarely as much as this year's edition. Those fighting for the Yellow Jersey all performed better than ever, but only one will be standing on the top step of the podium tomorrow.

Winners

Alberto Contador Velasco successfully defended his first place in the general classification, and therefore is the biggest winner of all. The young Spaniard finished fifth and limited the damage in respect to both Evans and Leipheimer. Contador is a big promise for the future, and this year's victory could be the first of many to come.

Levi Leipheimer was always known as the man who didn't attack. Today, the American showed an unknown side of him and dominated the entire time trial. In the overall classification, Leipheimer doesn't climb but his third place at only 31 seconds from the winner is unique.

Of the top three, only Cadel Evans probably considers his time trial a failure. However, the Australian did clock a more than impressive time. He could not win the stage or the general classification, but will always be remembered as a main protagonist in one of the most thrilling time trials ever.

Losers

At this point in the Tour de France, it is hard to speak of losers. The 141 riders that started today also survived the time trial and are likely to finish their 'Grande Boucle' tomorrow.

After the chaos and scandals of the last day, every rider that managed to stay focused and stay on his bike, should be considered a winner.
