SÖLDEN, Aug 14 (CP) - Spaniard David López Garcia of Caisse d'Epargne is the winner of the fifth stage in the Deutschland Tour. Jens Voigt finished second and extends his overall lead.
The fifth stage, from Sonthofen to Sölden over 157.6 kilometers, included the highest climb of this race: The 2671 meters high Rettenbachferner.
An escape group with riders as Carlos da Cruz, Vladimir Efimkin and Lloyd Mondory was reeled in and a group of favorites was to decide the stage.
When Damiano Cunego increased the speed in that group, it was soon reduced to about seven riders including race leader Jens Voigt.
The surprising Dutchman Laurens ten Dam was next to try an attack but was countered by Spaniard David Lopez Garcia.
The latter turned out to have enough strength to stay ahead of the group and went on to take the stage victory. Voigt came in thirteen seconds later, followed by Rabobank rider Robert Gesink.
The fourth place went to Cunego, with Ten Dam finishing in fifth position.
