SONTHOFEN, 13 Aug (CP) - Italian Lampre-Fondital rider Damiano Cunego has won Monday's fourth stage of the Deutschland Tour, beating Davide Rebellin and David López Garcia in a sprint of three. CSC rider Jens Voigt was successful in clinging on to his overall lead.
The 183.8 km course from Singen to Sonthofen was a rather hilly one, covering one Category 1 climb and one Category 2 climb along the way. The summit of the last climb came with only approximately 17 kilometres left to ride, something which would shake up the overall classification.
During the day, Piet Rooijakkers of Skil-Shimano and Mariusz Wertecki of Volksbank were to be found in front. The duo escaped some 70 kilometres into the stage, and eventhough they had a lead close to 10 minutes, they were both reeled back in easily on the last climb.
The attacking started up the Riedbergpass, with Rebellin, Lopez Garcia and Cunego managing to break clear.
The trio managed to stay away and fight it out for the win. Cunego turned out to be the strongest, beating his fellow escapees in the final sprint. José Joaquin Rojas Gil led home the peloton only five seconds later.
